Postpartum exercise – when and how
October 23, 2010
These questions have every new mom. And probably a TONS of others. I remember myself, and how was to get used to my new life with a baby
We learn to care for the small person who is totally dependent on us. As we do, we must also learn how to take care of ourselves as mothers.
We can feel our body after giving birth as looking and feeling very different than it was before. We may be concerned to try to “return to normal”, or we may not feel ready to exercise the way we did before.
The next tips can help new mothers who may have questions about how to stay fit and feel good:
When is safe to start with exercising?
In general, it is suggested to wait until three weeks after a vaginal birth and six weeks after a Cesarean birth. Of course, it all depends on how your body feels.
Which exercises am I allowed to do first?
Within a few days of giving birth, mothers can begin to exercising with kegels, by contracting the muscles around the vaginal opening.
A week or two after delivery, taking some short walks will be healthy.
The lenght of timedoes ittake tolosethe excess weight which I gained during pregnancy?
This depends on how much weight was gained, your metabolism, physical activity and whether you are breastfeeding or not, ( breastfeeding uses almost one-third of our caloric intake)
Before I was pregnant, I regulary attended a vigorous exercise class. When can I return to class?
For vigorous exercise, you will probably have to wait until your baby is about 3 months old.
I’m finding that once you get your baby, it is really nearly impossible to to find enough time to exercise. What do you suggest for a new routine?
Maybe a naptime can be an opportunity to exercise, or new mom can incorporate child in dailly routine by walking with a stroller or whilw wearing a child
