A Day in The Life Of A New Home

August 14, 2009

Despite all my years I still feel like a little boy inside. I have a difficult time peering into the mirror and recognizing a fully realized mature man. I might have considered the birth of my 2nd child would have altered it, yet I still appear to be in self-denial of the aging process.

And regarding aging — or instead fighting it off — my dear wife and I bought a new house and this house features space in its basement for the exercise room my dear wfe has always sought. But I’m seeing dollar signs when I consider the many large and tiny things required, from the essential but oft-forgotten weight-lifting benches and fitness mats to deciding on the most versatile stationary bike. Stationary bicycles can be tricky now a days. Do I buy an upright or a recumbent bike? Should you select an old-school analog or electronic?

And then my dear wife appears determined to get an elliptical trainer too. Yes you read that correctly. One of the stationary bikes and an elliptical machine — not just one or the other. My guess is that the extra exercise equipment goes with the cream for stretch marks she began using after the birth of youngest daughter. I’m sure I’ll regret that jest.

I have to be deliberate with the budget because our new house is more of a fixer-upper. We wanted it to be this way, yet we still must cautiously budget everything, even the cabinet knob (I’m not kidding). My wife has an ambitious kitchen cabinet refacing project planned, but must remind her the sinks for the bathrooms she desires installed shall cost a pretty penny, as well.

Thankfully, we both appreciate the organic, rustic style, so we are furnishing our new house with unfinished furniture. Of course, it still requires some polishing off, but we can keep the expenses down and create better furniture than we could find in any store.

I found a good table for coffee with some nice, raw knotting and a console table in matching mahogany. For our patio outside we are researching outside fireplaces and we will go with some inexpensive wicker furnitures initially.

Furnishing a brand new house might seem so adult, but I cannot help but feel like I’m merely playing house. The new exercise equipment and furniture only feel like a new generation of playthings.
