Successful corporate web design can be a very difficult challenge, not least of all because often so many different people and opinions are behind it. The main question that should be asked, but often isn’t, is why you feel your business needs a website at all. This might seem a little ludicrous, but it is just such an assumption which can cause significant problems later on.

Significant problems – and also expensive ones! Too many businesses embark on developing a corporate website simply because they assume that, in today’s internet technology filled world, it is the done thing – almost expected of any business, no matter how large or small. In fact this isn’t true. The internet certainly offers many advantages, but isn’t to be seen as one all encompassing golden ticket to global success. Building a successful business website takes time and thought.

Considering it as merely a means by which customers can contact your business, like handing out a business card or buying a page in the telephone directory, is to reduce the potential benefits to merely an expensive business card. Certainly such a website might be stumbled upon once, but is unlikely to encourage visitors to return, or bookmark the site.

Corporate web design should ask serious questions about where the business is going, and how it wishes to engage with clients online, how it can take advantage of web trends to reach and attract specific niche markets and audiences, providing a service which is dynamic, useful and engaging. A corporate website should be informative, easy to navigate and accessible by all.

It’s a lot to ask for, but if no one’s asking, then the result will suit just as many.
