Cheap Domain Names - Should You Get One?
August 19, 2008
To access a third level domain the hosting company’s domain name must be included. This means that the domain name will be longer than usual and probably hard to remember. This difficulty means that it is often better to buy your own individual domain name. Domain name companies are all competing with each other to offer you a good deal, so it should be easy to buy cheap domains.
The price of a cheap domain name can be anything from completely free up to around seven dollars. Web hosting companies that offer free domain names that are worth anything will usually want the customer to buy web hosting from them, and the domain name is still paid for as part of a bundle. There is no need to get a webhosting package if you purchase a separate paid for domain name. It is possible to get a paid for domain name from one dollar, they go up from there.
Whether a person buys a normally priced domain name or a cheap domain name the registration process is the same. The first thing a customer needs to do is check whether their domain name is available. To check this availability a customer must enter the name that they want into a text box and then select the domain extension that they want. A customer my then purchase the domain if it is taken, if it already exists then another name must be chosen. Suggested alternatives will often be offered if the desired domain name is already in use.
Cheap domain names unfortunately come with some disadvantages - if the company is dishonest then the customer may never receive their requested domain name at all. What often happens is that the company tells the customer that they have to wait, typically less than a week, for the domain to activate. At the end of a few days the domain still doesn’t work, and emailing the company doesn’t work either.
A good first step to making sure that a person hasn’t found a fraudulent company is to check with the better Business Bureau and find out if the cheap domain name company is registered. Making sure that businesses operate in a way that is acceptable and not fraudulent is what the Better Business Bureau does. Suspicious companies will not usually have the normal land based contact systems such as an address or phone number, so checking for these is a good second step to see if the cheap domain name company may be fraudulent. Find out if a company has a good or bad reputation on message boards that are dedicated to webmasters, as a good third step.
Staying clear of a company that does not have anyone to offer a good opinion may be a reasonable step. There is no other drawback to using a reputable cheap domain name company to get a discounted domain name. The way that domain names work takes no account of how much they cost, so if a person can get cheap domain names through a legitimate company then they should take advantage of it.
